Why Vaccinate Guys Against HPV?

While HPV was discovered decades ago, it is the long-term effects and complications it causes which are just being realized. Recently, a new vaccine--Gardasil--has been developed to protect against some strains of HPV. This lesson will help students develop an advanced understanding about the vaccine and how it can help both males and females reduce risk around HPV.

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson students will:

  1. Be able to explain what Gardasil is and when and how teens guys should get vaccinated.
  2. Be able to demonstrate their understand of the sexually transmitted disease (STD) HPV by describing at least two preventative strategies.

What's It Like to Get an STD Test?

"Get tested!" Teens hear this refrain often, but rarely know what testing really entails. With this lesson you can arm your students with knowledge on how, where and why they should get tested. Students will read a firsthand account of one teen's journey to get tested for STDs and will learn about the laws related to STD and HIV testing in their state.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this lesson, students will be able to

  1. Describe how testing for eight of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is done.
  2. Name at least one place where they can get tested for STDs.
  3. Describe the laws related to STD and HIV testing in their state.
