Medical Advisory Board

The following members of our 2008 Medical Advisory Board conduct content reviews of our Sex, Etc. Web site to ensure that it includes the most up-to-date, medically accurate information. The board members are as follows:

Forrest L. Alton, MSPH, CHES, has been involved in adolescent reproductive health for the past nine years. Currently the executive director at the South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, Mr. Alton directs and oversees the Campaign’s education, technical assistance, public awareness, advocacy and research efforts. He serves on multiple boards and advisory committees at the state and national level and is a frequent guest of television and radio talk shows on a variety of adolescent health topics. Mr. Alton is a Certified Health Education Specialist with a bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion from Coastal Carolina University and a master’s degree from the USC Arnold School of Public Health.

Eric R. Buhi, MPH, PhD, CHES, has maintained a longstanding interest in improving the sexual health of young people. Since 2006, he has served as assistant professor and, more recently, director of the Collaborative for Research in Sexual Health at the University of South Florida’s College of Public Health in Tampa. Dr. Buhi has been published in peer-reviewed journals and delivered presentations at national and international meetings. He is a member of numerous professional societies, including the American Academy of Health Behavior, American Association for Health Education, American College Health Association, American Public Health Association, American School Health Association and the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality.

David E. Corbin, PhD, FASHA, is a professor of health education, public health and women’s studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He is a lifetime member of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists. He was the president of the Public Health Association of Nebraska, and currently serves on its Board of Directors. Dr. Corbin has taught sex education and drug education at all age levels and has written many books and articles, including a series of articles on sex education for a national health magazine for high school students.

LeighAnn Frattarelli, MD, is an obstetrician-gynecologist who will complete her Masters in Public Health (MPH) at Columbia University in May of 2008. She attended medical school at the University of Tennessee, in Memphis, and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Frattarelli ran an OB-GYN clinic for adolescents in Honolulu, HI, until 2006 and served on the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s Adolescent Committee. She currently works for Reproductive Medical Associates in Morristown, NJ.

Adrian R. Lyde, PhD, CHES, is the Coordinator of Pre-Student Teaching Clinical Experiences in the College of Education at Illinois State University.  Dr. Lyde has over nine years experience working as a health educator at the secondary and university levels and for a community child and family development program. She has three years experience as a curriculum trainer for the Illinois HIV Prevention Education Project, and her more than 25 publications and professional presentations include topics on healthy relationships, decision making, sexuality, coordinated school health programs, advocacy and leadership.  Dr. Lyde is a very active member of the American School Health Association and has served the organization in a variety of capacities. She is a past chair of the Sexuality Education and Reproductive Health Council, and the current chair of the Advocacy Committee.  

J. Terry Parker, PhD, ATC, CHES, FASHA, is a faculty member in the Department of Behavioral Sciences & Health Education, Emory University School of Public Health, where he teaches Adolescent Health. He serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of The Prevention Researcher, and is a Peer Reviewer for the Journal of Adolescent Health and the Journal of School Health. Dr. Parker is the former chair of the Council on Sexuality Education & Reproductive Health of the American School Health Association, and currently serves as the lead facilitator for the Our Whole Lives (OWL) sexuality education program at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta, GA.

Kim Phillips-Knope, MSW, is a professional trainer, program designer, researcher and evaluator specializing in LGBTQ responsive programming. She has over ten years experience working with youth as an educator in traditional and nontraditional classrooms within community-based organizations and as an athletics coach. As a consultant for state and local governments, she has facilitated workshops for and collaborated with schools throughout the United States, supporting their efforts to create safer learning environments for all students, especially those who identify as LGBTQ.

Deborah Roffman, MS, is a certified family life and human sexuality educator who has worked in the field for more than three decades as a teacher, trainer, presenter, editor and author. She has consulted with more than 300 schools and youth-serving agencies throughout the United States and currently teaches human sexuality education in grades 4-12 in Baltimore-area elementary and secondary schools. She is the author of Sex and Sensibility: The Thinking Parents’ Guide to Talking Sense about Sex and But How’d I Get in There in the First Place?: Talking to Your Young Child about Sex.

Elizabeth Schroeder, EdD, MSW, is an award-winning sexuality educator, trainer and consultant who has worked with thousands of youth-serving professionals and young people throughout the United States and overseas. Author, editor and contributor to articles, books and curricula, Dr. Schroeder also serves as a sexuality expert on several Web sites. An assistant professor at Montclair State University, Dr. Schroeder is also the co-founding editor of the American Journal of Sexuality Education and chairperson of the SIECUS Board of Directors.

Linda Synovitz, PhD, RN, CHES, FASHA, obtained a nursing degree in 1964 and a PhD in Health Education from Kent State University in 1993. She has taught in higher education for 27 years and is currently a full professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Southeastern Louisiana University. Dr. Synovitz is a Fellow of the American School Health Association and was the chair of the committee to develop the Louisiana State Health Education Content Standards. She is a member of four national, one regional and one state health organization and has served on their boards or as an officer. 

Pamela Wilson, MSW, is an independent program consultant and trainer. Since the early 80’s she has helped a variety of organizations develop sexuality education programs for children, adolescents and parents. She was the original author of the Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy Program for Girls Incorporated and has written or co-authored numerous curricula and other publications. She has served as a member of the training team for the Annual Workshop on Human Sexuality at Thornfield, the AASECT Summer Institute, and for NJ TISHE (Training Institute for Sexual Health Education). Ms. Wilson has served two terms on the Board of Directors for SIECUS and served multiple terms on the Answer National Advisory Board.
